MTV Shows That Have Made Waves
MTV has never been afraid of going in the water. Now it’s dipped it toe into Canada’s Great Lakes with the premiere of Grand Benders — a docu-soap about life in Grand Bend, Ontario. Grand Benders isn’t the first show on MTV that is set near the water. Here are some other MTV shows that have made waves over the years.
MTV captured the permanent vacation vibe with the reality drama Maui Fever. The series debuted on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 and ran for eight episodes. Maui Fever followed the daily lives of several young haole friends living in the Kaanapali area on the island of Maui, Hawaii.
Then there was Surf Girls, which follows 14 ‘babes with boards’ as they trek across the world, surfing the best waves and making a play for the pros. The series aired on MTV from May 12, 2003 to July 7, 2003.
8th & Ocean premiered on MTV on March 7, 2006 and aired for ten episodes. The series followed the lives of ten male and female fashion models from Irene Marie Models living together in Miami’s South Beach area.
The creators of 8th & Ocean were also responsible for Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, a mega-hit for MTV when it launched in September 28, 2004. The series aired three seasons and focused on the personal lives of several students attending Laguna Beach High School. The show produced several spin-offs, most notably The Hills, which chronicled Season 1 cast member Lauren Conrad’s personal and professional life after moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the fashion industry.
Jersey Shore, one of the most popular reality shows in television history, was also an MTV original production. It debuted December 3, 2009 and ran for six seasons. Jersey Shore followed the lives of eight housemates spending their summer at the Jersey Shore in the state of New Jersey. The show debuted amid a flurry of controversy around the portrayals of Italian-American stereotypes, and scrutiny from Seaside Heights locals because the cast members were not residents of the area. The series garnered record ratings for MTV, making it the network’s most viewed series telecast ever.
The Real World was the real deal for MTV. The longest running show in the channel’s history and one of the longest-running reality series in history, it is credited with launching the modern reality TV genre. The Real World followed beach bums and beach babes from Miami, Cancun, Key West, Sydney, and Honolulu. No other series gives you a glimpse into life at world-renowned sun and sand locations. You can get a tan just by watching it!
Aside from being represented by The Real World, Australian beaches got their due in Freshwater Blue. The series followed teens just out of high school as they frolicked on Australia’s gorgeous Gold Coast. The first season of Freshwater Blue premiered on December 2, 2010 on MTV Australia.
